Adipose Stem Cells & SVF: Preparation, Evidence & Risks

How to investigate a procedure using material collected from fat.

Updated 9 October 2026Patient information · References included

Stromal vascular fraction, or SVF, is a mixed cell fraction associated with adipose tissue. It should not be described as a uniform dose of purified stem cells.

Map the proposed procedure

Ask whether the procedure includes fat collection, how the tissue is processed and whether the resulting material is used locally, combined with a fat graft or given through another route. These are materially different proposals. “Same day” describes scheduling, not proof of safety or benefit.

Your care team can explain the cell source, preparation process and quality checks for the treatment being discussed.

Follow the material through each step

01

Collection

Confirm the fat donor site and collection procedure.

02

Processing

Identify the fraction produced and quality checks.

03

Administration

Confirm whether it is local, combined with a graft or given by another route.

This is a way to understand a proposal, not a protocol shared by all listed clinics. The treating team must supply its actual method.

What a technical description should contain

Ask for the name of the preparation and how the clinic characterizes it. Total cell count, viable cell count and the identity of the cells are different pieces of information. If a product is described only by the amount of fat collected, that does not tell you exactly what will be administered.

Also distinguish same-day processing from cell expansion and storage. These steps change the proposal and its regulatory questions. Do not assume that a banking agreement guarantees a future clinical use.

Evidence follows the indication

A skin, knee, breast or systemic wellness claim requires its own supporting evidence. Do not transfer a result from one body area to another. Ask for research using the same preparation and route and for the legal status of the specific proposed use.

Cell collection adds its own procedural considerations. Ask about anesthesia, the collection site, aftercare and what happens if the material does not meet the clinic’s quality requirements.

Questions unique to this approach

  • Is the material SVF, another fat-derived fraction or cultured cells?
  • What testing is done before administration?
  • Is any portion stored, and what separate consent and fees apply?
  • Would the procedure be recommended without cell enrichment?
